Flying Solo, by Linda Holmes

Wed, Apr. 23rd, 2025 08:32 am
Reminiscent of early modern Jennifer Cruisie: A single woman (size 18) (approaching forty) returns to her small Maine hometown to clean out her great-aunt's house, reconnects with her high school boyfriend, and runs afoul of a local antique dealer.

Reminiscent, only not as smooth or as charming as Cruisie's earlier work. The writing is filled with pointless detail, the banter isn't as fun as it should be, and it takes nearly half the book for something interesting to happen. I'm not sorry I read it—because they do put a crew together and there is a heist—but I could have bailed out early on and wouldn't have missed much. Also, while there is romance, this isn't a Romance as the ending is hand-wavy in a way that doesn't fit the genre, but even without the expectation of a happily ever after, I found it annoyingly vague about the logistics of the relationship.

Contains: death of a family member, though not much grief; brief mention of infertility; starts off extremely heterosexual but eventually throws in two queers; non-explicit m/f sex.

Coconut cream rice pudding

Sun, Apr. 20th, 2025 05:56 pm
20-Minute Creamy Coconut Rice Pudding Recipe by Mama Gourmand, website tagline "gluten-free made easy." The recipe includes an optional cinnamon whipped cream topping which I didn't attempt.

What I had in the house was a can of coconut cream, so I scooped some out into a 3/4 cup measure, and added water to fill both the can and the measuring cup. Turned out great! I used the full amount of sugar, 1/3 cup, and it tasted a little too sweet.

Recipe as I made it:
Time
20 min

Tools
Medium pot, stove

Ingredients
2 cups cups cooked white rice
13.5 ounce canned coconut cream (not milk)
⅓ cup granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup: scoop of coconut cream, add water to make 3/4 cup, and add water to fill the can of coconut cream back up.
1 large egg
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Comes together pretty fast )

I Just Got a Kitten. What Do I Do?: How to Buy, Train, Understand, and Enjoy Your Kitten, by Mordecai Siegal:

Why do all these books with titles like What The Heck Do I Do With This Kitten??? insist on starting with a lengthy explanation of what cats are, how they work, and where to find them? I already have a kitten or I wouldn't have picked up this book which seemed to understand that I Just Got A Kitten.

It's a good resource if you're going to get a kitten and want advice on how to pick one and what to do once you've brought the guy home, but if you already have a kitten in hand, the last two chapters are the most relevant.

Fun Fact: The kitten on the cover of this book looks almost exactly like my kitten, though this kitten is fuzzier, and mine started out that small but has since tripled in size.

OTW Board Meeting on April 26!

Tue, Apr. 15th, 2025 08:34 am

The OTW has announced the next public Board meeting will be held on April 26 from 15:00 to 16:00 UTC. For some that will actually be the 27th, though, so be sure to check what time that is for you.

The posted agenda:

  • Decisions made since the last public meeting
  • Updates to the Board Year Roadmap
  • Strategic Planning One Year Implementation Report
  • Any other business (Questions & Answers)

Meetings are held in the OTW Discord server and last approximately an hour. The Board will address the agenda first, and once that business is concluded they will take at least ten questions. Questions that are not answered during the meeting will be combined and posted as weekly Q&A threads in the #questions-answers channel starting two weeks after the most recent public meeting.

For this meeting, there is the option to send in questions in advance through a Google Form. You'll need to be logged into a Google account in order to submit a question, and only one question per person will be accepted. Questions can be submitted up to three days before the meeting begins or until fifty questions have been submitted. At that point, the form will be closed.

Because procedures may continue to change, we recommend reading through the OTW Discord's Community Guidelines in the #rules channel to familiarize yourself with the details of how meetings will be run.

We hope to see you there!

Recipe: Crispy Waffles from Snixy Kitchen

Sun, Apr. 13th, 2025 08:58 am
These Crispy Waffles from Snixy Kitchen cook up with golden brown, with crisp outsides and chewy insides.

They take a little bit of extra effort as you have to whip the egg whites to stiff peaks and then fold them into the batter, but my stand mixer made short work of the task. A hand mixer would also work if you're up to holding on to it for that long. But I have never made waffles that turned out this light and crispy, not even back in the gluten and dairy days, so it's definitely worth it.

The recipe calls for whole milk and butter, but I used Trader Joe's unsweetened almond/cashew/macadamia milk and avocado oil, and had great results. The waffles taste perfectly wonderful without any toppings at all, lightly sweet and eggy, like a fortune cookie or a funnel cake, but they'd be delicious with fresh fruit or a dab of maple butter. Despite the oat flour, which you can't really taste, these are mostly starch and do leave a bit of a starchy aftertaste, so some toppings might help counter that.

I doubled the order because four waffles is not enough waffles, and I like to have some in the freezer. They warm up great in the toaster oven/toaster/oven and can easily be eaten out of hand if you're on the go or eating in front of your computer. As I am at this very moment.

Twitterlike is a Bad Shape

Sat, Apr. 12th, 2025 08:18 pm

Twitter and its imitators have adopted a structural design that is fundamentally bad for people. This isn't just a matter of who's in charge; it's a problem with the thing itself. Forcing users to adhere to a tight character limit, discouraging link culture, preventing people from editing their own posts, steering people into sharing things they hate, incentivizing rage bait with trending feeds, subjecting people to decontextualized encounters, encouraging conflict by discouraging tags, and leaving users powerless to clean up the resulting mess—all of this is bad shape.

The Broken Earth Trilogy, by N.K. Jemisin

Wed, Apr. 9th, 2025 09:36 am
A global catastrophe, a people who can control rock and lava and must hide who they are or be enslaved—or killed—and a story that starts out like fantasy, turns into the kind of science fiction where advanced technology left behind by earlier civilizations might as well be magic, and then circles back around to magic. Just as this is both science fiction and fantasy at once, the tenor of the second person POV similarly slides back and forth over the course of the series, telling two stories with a single voice.

It's brutal and incredibly engrossing, with detailed worldbuilding, interesting voices, and complex characters. The ways these people love each other is bananas.

Don't read the blurbs because they have spoilers, but do read these books one after another for maximum effect, and know that there's a glossary in the back that I only found once I was finished with the first book. It would have been helpful while I was still reading, but thanks to the excellent and immersive writing, I sussed out all the meanings on my own.

Highly recommended, though the content will be a dealbreaker for some. A child dies violently at the hands of his father on the first page, and it haunts the rest of the book, though that's only the beginning of the tragedy.

Contains: climate apocalypse; violence; child harm—including sexual abuse—and death; a literal caste system with institutionalized slavery, forced breeding, eugenics; a world where brown skin is the default; generational trauma; polyamory; transgender supporting characters; second person POV; animal harm; amputation; references to cannibalism.
